A grueling 32 hour journey later…and I land, in utter shock. I JUST LANDED, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD, IN AUSTRALIA! Australia MATE! A dream of mine for as long as I’ve dreamed. The kicker- I didn’t pay a cent to get here or be here for a whole week. If you can believe it, I still can’t, my job sent me here for a 3 day tech convention. The rest of the time, MINE. The entire time, still paid for. Put up in a phenomenal hotel in the ‘Darling Center’ district, I couldn’t be any fucking happier.
Some facts I learned while Down Under:
The Sydney Stock Exchange is the 9th largest in the world
Sydney began when 11 ships came into the bay in 1798. Originally the convicts were sent to America but after they were not permitted.
230 days of sunshine yearly. No extreme seasonal differences. However June is known to be the wettest month.
During the day it’s normal- shops, restaurants. At night, Kings Cross becomes Sydney’s ‘red light district’.
Sydney Opera House. One of the worlds most famous sights.
There is a large Boar in front of the Sydney Hospital. First rub its gold nose. Then, if you put money in the box in front of the Boar, it’s said to be good luck.
Dating from the 1920s, Chinatown in Sydney is cited as the largest of its kind in Australia. This bustling locale is home to an array of shops and the longstanding Paddy’s Market. Ponds, pavilions, and a teahouse are highlights of the tranquil Chinese Garden of Friendship. The Chinatown Friday Night Market is popular for Asian street food. The area also has numerous eateries with Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese fare.
